A few pictures to encourage you to visit Riga:

There are endless streets of ancient buildings all of the same height .

Then there are rows of terraced homes and shops,

and on the end of this row was this advertisement for a local bank:

Here’s some surviving city wall:

and here’s some bleak reminders of Soviet occupation:

Sadly, it was a public holiday and the museums were closed.

Maybe even this is Soviet self-worship:

The following St Peter’s Church gives a hint of the unordered streets in the old city:

and this is possibly my favourite fable. I had it on 3D binoculars and viewed it countless times.

The Musicans of Bremen. Considering that Bremen is in Germany, I wonder what the connection with Riga is? I have arrived in Copenhagen but only to get to my b+b.

UPDATE – The sculpture was a gift from Bremen, another Hansa city and is a replica of one in Bremen. The Hanseatic League was a guild of trading cities that in the Middle Ages held a monopoly over the Baltic Sea, and much of the North Sea.

I’m out by a day or two I know, but maybe that’s the reason the whole town has closed down. The people have retained the feel of the ancient town that it is. Everywhere I walked were photo’s that were meant to be taken but you have to make decisisions sometime. I didn’t see a building over 5 floors. On finding my way to the old city I found remains of a section of the city walls, many churches (maybe all Orthodox – hard to say – but often just metres from each other), statues, winding narrow streets, cobblestone roads, trams, trolley-cars, electric trains, no smog, un-rushed traffic. Photos to follow when I have my own computer connected to the net.
