John Grey and his dog Bobby

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

At Greyfriar’s church, in Edinburgh, just behind The Elephant House, where J.K. Rowling worked on the first Harry Potter book, there is an ancient graveyard full of stories. One of them is about the death of a policeman John Grey and his loyal Skye terrier Bobby who remained at the grave for fourteen years.

Kronborg Castle (Hamlet’s)

June 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Tanya reports that her paper was well-received this morning.  She decided to give a quick summary and throw it open for conversation.  Lots of discussion followed.
While she was presenting I took a north-boun train to Helsingor this morning to see Kronborg Castle where Shakespeare’s Hamlet is set.  Hamlet is older than the castle but Shakespeare [...]

The World’s Dirtiest City

June 16th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Forbes reports that Baku takes the prize as being the world’s dirtiest city.  To put this in perspective many people comment on the news item and can’t understand why their filthy third world city in Africa or India etc.  doesn’t rate in the top 25.  Maybe it’s the kilometres of oil-soaked land just out of [...]

Early evening walks

June 16th, 2008 · 1 Comment

With twilight still being around at 9.30 it’s easy to walk late in the day.  The funicular steps are an easy way to get some exercise so I headed there again but finally took a photo of this road sign that I’d been meaning to take for a long time.  (Did I include one from [...]

Gapminder world

June 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment

This is an astoundingly clever way of presenting statistics over several decades.  It looks at international data on life-expectancy and income.  You can select any country or combination you wish to highlight.  Notice how much China has advanced in the last 55 years.
I think we’ll be using this in our units of inquiry next school [...]

The 31 Day Comment Challenge for leaving comments on blogs started at the beginning of May. I learnt about it after it after it started and have only just started to think about it. Sue Waters (The Edublogger) explains the aim like this: to spend a month of focused commenting for us [...]

Two snow days and the cold weather persists.

January 11th, 2008 · No Comments

While we only had three days this week due to snow days, we get to make up one of the days in a couple of weeks, when we lose a public holiday in an effort to maintain the promised 180 days of school days.
The snow has diminished a little but the footpaths are still dangerous [...]

Baku Snow

January 6th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s -1 degree outside.  There is light snow but other snow on the ground has almost disappeared.   I like to think the traffic noise is softer because of it.   I see that Tuesday is forecast for a max of -4 deg with a min of -6.  There’s not much difference between night and day temperatures [...]
