A friend’s uncle died this week. His death was expected so hopefully there’s not too much grief to be endured. She shared with me some of the customs. Apologies if I get them wrong.
- On the third day the women meet at the cemetery (I guess the coffin is in the grave), around noon, then meet together to talk about the person. It seemed to be about coming together to be sad together.
- The men at around 4pm meet at the cemetery and then go off and talk until around 10pm.
- Other friends might come after work.
They all meet again on the 7th and 30th day, and then once more after a complete year.
In the villages they come together for a wailing session but not so much in the city. The belief is that the person is still with them in that first year and I guess the meetings help the transition to heaven.
