10th Jan 2008 The European Union made a statement on Azerbaijani President’s decree of pardon releasing 119 prisoners.
Foreign Ministry of Slovenia chairing the European Union reported that the statement welcomes the president’s act.
“The European Union welcomes the decree of pardon signed on occasion of the Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis and release of five reporters. President’s pardon decree is a positive step of Azerbaijan in the direction of implementation of the international norms on free media,” the statement says.
The European Union wishes the release of the other three imprisoned reporters and adoption of the law on defamation.
“We are sure that such political gestures will have a positive influence on the reinforcement of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union,” the statement says.
