Leigh in Azerbaijan

The following is another straight excerpt from Today.Az. While it gives little information, it indicates that the government is preparing a case against another journalist. While previous posts may indicate that freedom of the press is improving, this may not be the case. Maybe journalist’s imprisonment is not surprising when in neighbouring Turkey any insult against the government or Ataturk is punishable by imprisonment.

Defenders of the editor-in-chief of the Azadlyg newspaper Ganimat Zahid, Elchin Aadighov and Osman Kazimov met with their defendant.

“During the meeting we presented a petition to G.Zahid on which he put his signature under the request to send petition to the European Court of Human Rights. He told us that a provocation is prepared against him. We, in turn, recommended him to appeal to the administration of the investigation ward”, E.Sadygov said.

He said the nature of the provocation is being investigated.

According to him, the provocation may include a new charge.
