Anniversary of the death of Heydar Aliyev

Today was the anniversary of the announced death of the previous president of Azerbaijan, who was the leader of the KGB in Soviet days.  The government machine went into place and blocked many roads leading to the cemetery for famous people here. Consequently our bus took us to a nearby subway to avoid using the jammed roads.

I’m told it was common knowledge that he died some months earlier and that the death was kept secret (almost) so that the skittles could be put in place to ensure his son’s election as president. On one level he seems to be an honoured elder but on the other hand that seems to be an engineered phenomena.
