Sirince and Ephesus

I revisited two of my favourite places today. Tanya and I both decided that we could retire to Sirince. It’s a small Greek town that was emptied in the population exchange of 1922 but not filled with Albanian moslems until some time later. It’s a pretty, small village seemingly depending on tourism, restaurants, wines, olives and gosleme (gers-lem-ay). The kids today did some serious shopping and it was the chaperones’ role to make sure that the kids weren’t ripped off by too much.

We then all went to a booked open-air restaurant where we had gosleme and kofte, coke and baklava. The gosleme wasn’t as good as from the elderly woman’s home on the hill earlier in the year.

Ephesus was just as magic as last time. Certainly there were people from many languages there but no as bad as weekends when it’s thick with people. I enjoyed going a second time and getting a different perspective on the sculptures, seeing different detail. How amazing to see this place that figures in the birth and spread of Christianity!

We also visited the mosque in Selcuk, which is the township next to Ephesus. We were there at prayer time. I think the guide was moslem as she told us the five pillars of Islam but gave no info on St Paul and the silversmiths in Ephesus.

    Hi Leigh,
Sounds like life for you is brimming with new experiences!! So very far away, and so very different….

Here we are just beginning harvest - yes we actually have some crop to reap! It seems that most of the crops managed to push roots down deep enough before the rain stopped, to reach moisture and hang on. We are fust running out of pasture for the sheep, and will need to hand feed until harvest is done and the sheep can eat the stubble.

Emma’s violin lessons via Skype continue to go well. She’s picking it up fast. I owe you for that idea - thanks!

Ephesus sounds wonderful. Maybe, one day, I’ll see it for myself…

    Keep well.
