The birth of a grand-daughter

We visited Freya and Graham Saturday night after a day at the Adelaide Festival of Ideas.  Freya had been working hard with contractions all day. After talking to their mid-wife, they went into the Women and Children’s Hospital at around 8pm . Tanya went into the hospital around 1am to be with them and at 2.10am a healthy girl was born. There was some stitching to be done and Freya lost around 750ml of blood which was obviously too much for her as she fainted a couple of times. This brought the medical personnel running, transfusions of plasma, and injections of antibiotics and other drugs. Tanya was able to care for the baby while Graham and medical attention focussed on Freya.  Freya was rather doped up for much of Sunday but luckily the little one was happy to sleep for much of the day.

I got to the hospital early in the daylight hours of yesterday and Tanya promptly gave me the little girl to hold. While a baby is always precious, it reminded me of when Freya was born in 1976 when I had a sense of instant love for her in those first few hours after birth.  Ah, life is good!  There is much to give thanks for.   I think the years of being a grandparent will be wonderful.
