This link says that some people say that the fall of Constantinople to Sultan Mehmed marked the end of the Middle Ages. It gives a day by day account of the fall of the city. An amazing story!

Isn’t it amazing how some traditions work. This is talking about the gradual decline of the Ottoman Empire:
Another weakness was that primogeniture was not used in Islam and the transference of power from a deceased sultan to his son was frequently disputed. If a sultan died without a male heir or if he left several sons, succession was violently contested. In the early period, to prevent ongoing rivalries, all male relatives of a newly crowned sultan were put to death. here’s the link
Interesting way to avoid bloodshed!
I’ve just discovered how to create an RSS feed to ABC PM. Now I can come home and click on the link to hear political commentary from back home. I’ve also found an RSS link to a host of Spanish lessons. Pity I can’t do it with Turkish.

Hi Leigh
Great blog! So much to read and learn - can’t wait to show Emma. How many students attend the school? Will try to get Rom and Natasha to show the kids here some of your photos.
Cheers
Tracey

Around 1800 in the school. There are around 1100 in the primary school. There are over 100 teachers and 300 staff all up. There are ‘blue-collar’ workers everywhere: driving the buses, sweeping the floors, serving the food in the cafeteria, on the phones… Hey, Tracey, encourage the children from Crossways to write to me, especially my children from this year’s Gr 4,5,6
